CAIXAFORUM I - "On som on anem" and "Surrealism"

WHAT DO I EXPECT? - “ON SOM. ON PODRÍEM SER”

According to the info from the web, this exposition raises a review of our connections with the environment and views/landscapes, understanding this spaces as definition in transition.

After reading the presentation of this exposition, I do expect current objects and scenarios I got in my daily life as art, with the aim of trying to hit the expectation with a common reality, thus to make us think who is it so common for us certain objects, how or why the creators ended up building such instruments or architectures for certain actions, and how all society accepted it was the best way.

I think the reflection to do on that, would be if there’s a better way, any change that would improve or reduce our impact on Earth. Being conscious of where we are, and where we could be.

WHAT DO I EXPECT? - “OBJECTES DE DESIG: SURREALISME I DISSENY

According to the info from the web, surrealism was inspired in design and daily objects.

“We can make real what is fantastic, thus is more real what really exists, Salvador Dalí.”

André Breton was the first artist to publish about surrealism, therefore other arts took place in this movement as well.

So, after reading the presentation of the exposition and its importance in history, I do expect art breaking the limit in design, alienating what’s rational or functional, trying to make the expectation think more than what they can see at first, exposing the artists’ inner world linked to objects with a function, linking our minds to the materials that build our reality.

REAL VISITING EXPERIENCE

The exposition was divided into two big rooms.

I first entered a big room with various compositions of different objects and also a huge wooden room in the middle which you could just see if you kneeled down. “On som. On podríem ser”

All the compositions there had a meaning behind all of them related to the concept of the space.

From this exposition, four artwork got my attention.

MONA HATOUM

She made us think about what home means with this artwork made out of lots of common objects we can find in our daily life, and some with personal meaning, all of them moving every time you stopped in front of the drying rack (clothesline).

Home is always with us, you define what home is, which cultures are gonna define it, where it's gonna go, what is gonna be personal.

MIKE KELLEY - THE TRAJECTORY OF LIGHT IN PLATO'S CAVE
He made us feel pushed it we wanted to see what real art was, we had to interact with the artwork to understand it.

How we should be adventurous if we wanted to know the truth, the beauty of experiencing art.

LOS TRABAJADORES DE PEDRO G. ROMERO

This video made me realize our own body is our space to be, where our soul can move and express everything it has to say.

MARTIN KIPPENBERGER - LOVE ME AND LEAVE ME AND LET ME BE LONELY
When I first saw this deer made out of mirrors I thought about "The theory of the mirror", a mirror can't exist if it hasn't your reflection, but you still exist if there's no mirror, all is about the display of presence. Then my mind focused on the concept of the animal, they don't need us, they can see any reflection on us, but we can not survive without them, maybe it's toxic love, they don't need us, then I realized why the animal was face down.

The second exposition about surrealism, I dind't like it that much, I was so stressed seeing all unusual and ineffective objects. Why was art making useful things useless? Watching some artworks made me feel uncomfortable or upset.

This could be an example of my struggle represented by what surrealistic people could define as art, from Man Ray.

CONCLUSIONS, WHICH IS THE EDUCATIONAL INTEREST

We could tell art is just a subjective conception of how we see beauty, if beauty is the achievement of understing the artist that wants to transmit a message; to get impregnated by the artwork because of its essence; to just feel whatever the artwork transmits to you and enjoy that emotion.

Also, we could talk about how history got a huge influence in art, as preocupations change within periods, how rebels took art as a tool to manifet their disagreement; or how now it's a way to make people think about what are we missing in this society to make it a little bit more interactive; empathetic.

And finally we could define how art can be represented.
